Several years ago, the film actor Robert Redford was walking through a hotel lobby. When he reached the elevator, a woman noticed him. She ran after him and asked, “Are you the real Robert Redford?” As the elevator doors were closing, he replied: „Only when I am alone.”
Today’s readings give us a deep reflection on authenticity. In the Bible, “heart” is the word that means the person we really are, our real being. It is the part of us that decides whether or not – we can be faithful to our principles and values.
Jesus insists that there must be a connection between what is in our hearts and our actions. In order to bring forth good fruits we need to be aware of what is in our hearts.
So it is important to develop a life that has some room for the kind of self-knowledge, an example of which is Robert Redford. Setting aside time for silent prayer will help us to know what is in our hearts and how it connects to our daily lives.
This Wednesday Lent begins. I need this Lent. Perhaps you do too. Lent is a time for us to look into ourselves. Lent is a time of reflection on the authenticity of our Christian life. Do our deeds bear witness to the constant conversion of Christ in our lives?
May you and I allow God to take control of every aspect of our lives.
